Please help me welcome Layla Dorine to the LGBTQIA Author Spotlight. Layla comes to us from a small town in the Midwest.
Describe your books/your writing for the readers.
I write a little of everything, from heavy angst/slow burn, to sweet and spicy and all pointed in between. I have Littles, Pets, Daddies, Shifters, Rockers, Bikers, and all sorts of wanderers and wicked rebels.
What is something that makes you unique (personally or within your writing)?
A lot of the things my characters do, motorcycle riding, guitar playing, drifting around, painting, martial arts, playing magic, crafting things, are all things I love to do as well. I live vicariously through my characters and put a lot of my own misadventures into my stories.
Tell us about your writing process. Where do your ideas come from? Do you plan/plot or totally wing it?
Oh man, I try to plan, and I do jot down notes when ideas hit, but the moment the writing process starts the characters take over and generally derail any of the plans I might have had for them. All of my ideas are inspired by music, things I experience, things I witness and make notes on while I watch from a distance, and things that I wish could be.
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
The first time I got lost in a book and didn’t notice that the whole day had passed and I wasn’t going to make it home in time for dinner.
What is your favorite childhood book?
The Outsiders by SE Hinton
What is one of the best feelings in the world?
Kitty snuggles, Doggy kisses, the sound of a kitty purring as I read, seeing my kid succeed at something, being told someone likes one of my books. In short, joy and contentment.
If animals could talk, which would be the rudest?
OMG the geese!!
What’s a sound you absolutely love?
Laughter and music
Favorite snack while writing?
Anything seafood, especially calamari.
Favorite drink when writing?
Tea or a mixed cocktail
Favorite scent?
Patchouli and super hits incense
If someone is new to your writing, which book would you suggest they start with?
Ohhh tough choice. If they want angst: Gemini’s Rogue, if they want sweet and spicy: A Daddy for Christmas: Ryu, if they want middle of the road contemporary with second chance and a dose of angst, then Tripping Over the Edge of Night, Love in Shimmering Chartreuse, or And All Shall Fade to Black
